Rock ‘n’ roll homemade ice cream + recipe …

MONDAY: HIP MAMA

Kai is crazy about ice cream. I mean he LOVES it. So when my brother Kevin gave us his Play ‘n’ Freeze ice cream maker Kai was stoked and had been begging to make some ever since.

It was easy. On each polar end of the ball there were openings. One side is where you pour the ingredients (which is listed below). The other side is where you pour ice and rock salt. Forty minutes and a lot of rolling and kicking the ball later, we’re all screaming for ice cream.

Basic Vanilla Ice Cream

1 pint of Half & Half*
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
1/3 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar

M&Ms to garnish

*Using whole cream makes a richer creamier ice cream. Using part milk and half and half makes a lighter ice cream, but takes longer to freeze. (I chose half and half because there were six grams of fat for every tablespoon of heavy cream. I think next time we’ll use soy creamer for even lower calories and fat.)

*Yield: about a pint of smooth and creamy ice cream.
